Frequently Asked Questions
What is Community Choice Aggregation (CCA)?
CCAs are not-for-profit agencies governed by local elected officials and allow communities to control how their electricity is sourced - all offer a high percentage of renewable energy in their regular "mix". The cost for electricity is comparable or less than what investor-owned utilities like PG&E charge and profits are reinvested in the communities that the CCA serves - not to shareholders. Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) started right here in the Bay Area in 2010, and there are now over 24 CCAs in California that serve over 11 million customers. CCAs generate the electricity and put the electricity on the grid; PG&E delivers the electricity to your residence and sends your bill. Look at your PG&E bill to see if you are a CCA customer - it's the "Generation" line item.
Why "Opt Up" to 100% Renewable Electricity?
When you opt up, you're supporting new clean energy generation in California and programs in your own community and there is no greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) associated with your electricity use.
Does 100% renewable electricity cost more?
The average Bay Area residential customer that chooses to upgrade to 100% renewable energy pays about the cost of a latte at your favorite cafe more, about $5-10 per month, depending on how much electricity is used. That additional "profit" is reinvested in the community through programs that support renters, homeowners, and businesses.
Can I Opt Up through PG&E?
Yes. PG&E offers a “Solar Choice” upgrade option to its customers.
